Welcome Back!

It’s now the second week of classes and we are so glad to be back for the fall semester! Today we held a full meeting of all Art and Design majors. Big news: our department has changed its name to the Department of Art + Design. We’ve also updated our building on campus so that now all Art + Design majors are in the same building. There is a new Tech Center on the first floor of ADB and we’ve got a full schedule of events planned for the Interior Design club this year. The IND Program is now on Twitter and Instagram; look for SageINDprogram. We’re very excited about all of the changes taking place! To all of our students – Welcome back!

Students tour University at Albany School of Business building

The International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) Tech Valley Chapter invited Interior Design students from Sage College of Albany to join them in touring the new University at Albany School of Business building. The tour was led by Tony Alfieri, Associate Principal for Perkins & Will, New York, the project’s architect. The building is currently under construction and due to be completed late Summer of 2013.

The building was fully enclosed with most drywall partitions installed. An office furniture mockup was visible as were finished ceilings. It was interesting for the students to see a building with significant design features in the construction phase and to be able to connect what they had seen in textbooks and presentations to reality. Site safety considerations required dressing in hard hats, safety vests and wearing closed toe shoes, a new experience for our students.

Planning prinicipals for this building were reviewed by our guide. These included a significant role as a thoroughfare and gateway to the campus from a nearby bustop; an enormous challenge. Use of conference meeting spaces by the public and the incorporation of sustainable principles including skylights and a “butterfly” clerestory design. There were also “living room” type spaces to encourage random encounters and interaction amongs students.

Our students benefitted from this visit by seeing a construction site firsthand, and by interacting with other professionals and feeling what it might be like to be ‘part of the team’. Visits such as this one allow classroom learning to ‘come alive’ for students and provide an experience context in which to place that learning.

Residential Design Students Visit Local Kitchen Design Showroom

We are fortunate to have truly amazing Sage graduates who are eager to come back to Sage and participate in design education of the next generation. Nancy Moore is one of those graduates! Nancy is a kitchen designer at Millbrook Custom Kitchens and an active NKBA member. She has been generous enough to lead showroom tours for our Residential Design students for two years in a row. Tours like this provide students with hands-on experiences that simply can’t take place within the classroom. Thank you, Nancy, for your time and commitment to our students!

Students Collaborate During Combined Critique

Last week we had a little fun with our junior and senior Interior Design Students. An unannounced critique brought both classes together to review and comment on projects. The junior class is working on a Bonobos retail design for the PAVE competition. Seniors are developing their personal logos to be used in portfolios and other marketing materials.
