My work has revolved around escapism from boredom and chronic pain through the whimsy of fantasy and nature. Raised in the woods, my love for fantasy led me to develop a ravenous appetite for a great range of materials to work with. Enduring unexplained chronic pain since the age of 14 has fueled a desire for comfort while living in perpetual discomfort. Sheep are a powerful symbol representing both safety and confinement; the wool of a sheep acts both for the comfort and safety of the animal. Yet, when left overgrown, wool becomes a confining and even deadly prison. The escapism I seek is my own wool, binding me from experiencing the world in ways that I’d like to. Sheep become the catalyst rather than human forms as they disassociate traits that we tie to someone that is chronically ill. Assumptions are erased or eased at the very least. Through vibrant hues inspired by the golden fleece of Greek mythology and traditional Catholic imagery, my work aims to comfort those who experience chronic pain and illnesses and inspire thoughtfulness for those who don’t.
