Kahlil Dowdy

Graphic + Media Design

I am endlessly curious about the interplay between image and text. One contextualizes the other; and the act of design channels that context into a clarion call. I wield design’s ability to inform, inspire, and impress in pursuit of that curiosity. I battle to create authentic work which gives a voice to the marginalized, challenges contentious social issues, and fosters a sense of community.

Alignment: Find Your Type
RISO Print Zine
5.5″ x 8.5″

These print materials represent how type can be leveraged to draw attention to community news, organizing efforts, and define calls to action. Print lives with you; on coffee tables, tacked to walls, and tucked into shelves. As a third space, the Alignment Print Shop would both foster interaction and dialogue between creatives, facilitate the circulation of knowledge within a given community, and produce new case studies for change.

Futura: and the Guise of Authority
Inkjet Poster
16″ x 24″

While acknowledging Futura’s origins in the Bauhaus, appropriation by Nazi Germany in World War Two, and its presence on a lunar plaque, this poster investigates the typeface through the lens of Jenny Holzer. Holzer’s work wields the assumed authority of the typeface, through acts of reappropriation, to communicate a sense or urgency around ending violence and injustice around the western hemisphere.
