Art + Extended Media

As a child, it was made evident to me that in society appearance was the most crucial characteristic of being a woman. To this day, it angers me to feel like the only future for women is dependant on being viewed as a sex symbol, mother, or wife.In my work, I collage and draw with a sarcastic child-like immediacy to depict women as otherworldly, artificial, machines of culture.I dissect magazines looking for fragmented pieces of the female body and face, that act as representations of irrational Western beauty standards. These images are then combined with my drawings to simplify and exaggerate the parts of the image I have cut away recomposing the female form. With my work, I exploit the inequalities of beauty standards and gender dynamics by revealing the complications that lie beyond the pages of fashion magazines.
