Birthing Center for the Black Female Experience
Black maternal mortality begins with the history of enslaved women and doctors that pioneered surgical techniques on their bodies until they were either cured or died. This helped develop the structural racism we see today within our healthcare system as doctors ignore black female voices when they express fears or pain. Also, many black women struggle to receive access and quality care all around the country.

The intent was to design a birthing center and clinic that caters to the black female experience. The goal is to help fight against racial and class disparities in perinatal health and improve birth outcomes for mothers and babies. In my design, I provided access to a community-based maternity center where black women feel supported, welcomed, and empowered. This facility is an attempt to solve the lack of empathy in design and defeat the programming of racial injustice.
