Art + Extended Media

Art + Extended Media is a studio art program where students explore all types of media, from ink and clay to steamrollers and fire. They take risks, fail successfully, all in the name of making amazing artwork. They’re as fluent creating with a computer as they are with their hands. Our students develop authentic, original voices as they learn to redefine what’s possible in the arts and beyond.

The Art + Extended Media B.F.A. program emphasizes a strong studio practice. Following foundation year courses, students are provided with a studio space. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors meet together in a studio seminar course where they engage in and refine their art practice. Our goal is that students understand who they are as artists and why they make art.

We believe that an art practice should be well-rounded, where students can answer conceptual challenges with many skills. Our students take courses from the Graphic + Media Design and Interior Design programs, making Art + Extended Media a unique BFA degree where physical and digital art-making go hand-in-hand.

Art @ Sage

Art + Extended Media students are encouraged to take Topics courses that are unique to traditional arts curriculum. These courses explore alternative media with a thematic conceptual approach. Students in topics classes have collaborated on projects, created art for unique spaces, experimented with destruction as a means of practice, performed for the camera, and made prints with a steamroller.

The bottom line is that you enjoy what you do. We will challenge you to make thoughtful, engaging work that is yours, which is when art is at its best. Come for a visit!

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT
Sydney Lussier – Class of 2016

While at Sage, Sydney focused her practice on printmaking and sewing, integrating her writing, which cut into the psyche of women and their role in society and culture. She continued her education at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) earning her Masters in Education. She has returned to her hometown in Schenectady, New York, where she teaches art to K-12 students, sharing processes and concepts that she explores in her own practice.

“Coming into the AEM program at Sage, I have been met with endless support and guidance by both my peers and my professors. I have been encouraged to explore new mediums that are far beyond what I ever imagined possible. My practice is strengthened through the passion of those around me. The program has pushed growth in both my art and myself as a person in ways that I wouldn’t have thought possible on my own.”
